According to historical records, the Shilahara dynasty ruled Diveagar for around 450 years between 800 and 1265 AD. Due to its proximity to the sea, trade and business flourished here and the town eventually endured the wrath of Arab pirates who looted the village and destroyed many temples. The temple has an intriguing story. In 1997, Draupadi Patil, a local farmer, discovered a copper box while ploughing her fields. The box contained the Ganesha idol, which by some estimates has a mask of pure gold and weighs over 12 kg. A temple was built around this Suvarna Ganesha or the Ganesha of Gold. Photograpy is prohibited inside the temple.
